Minutes
Present: Board members Asmus, Bruce, Carpenter, Carter, Chamberlin, Fleischer, Pilchman (4:22); Administrators Gersen, Aubin, Roberts, Williams; and 12 teacher-presenters and members of the public.
1. Call to order
Chair Chip Fleischer called the Retreat to order at 4:13 p.m.
2. Overview of Special Education Process
Interim Assistant to the Superintendent, Joanne Roberts, presented a power point overview of the special education process and responded to questions from the Board and members of the public. Notes from the presentation are attached to the original minutes of the meeting.
3. Overview of Ray Special Education Programs
a. Ray School programs - Four Ray School Special Educators presented the Social Thinking Center and Learning Place programs, outlining the services provided to Ray School students. The group responded to questions from the Board and members of the public.
b. Special Education Budget implications - Assistant Superintendent for Business, John Aubin, said that he plans to have a breakdown of the special education budget by various service levels as part of the budgeting process. These service areas would include: regular classroom, resource room, self-contained, home, hospital, alternative settings, and out of District placements. In response to a question about Catastrophic Aid, Mr. Aubin said that the formula is changing, and Joanne Roberts reported that three students in the Hanover District would be affected by this change.
4. Review 2007-11 Enrollment projections
The Board and Administrators discussed the 2007-11 enrollment projections and the process that is used to compile them. Principal Williams will follow-up with this topic at a regular Board meeting later this fall. The Superintendent was asked to find out the qualifications for Title I given the possibility that the Gile Tract may house families who qualify for free and reduced lunches.
5. Overview of K-1 grade organization
a.Prior reviews of program - Principal Williams began the discussion by reviewing the genesis of the K-1 classroom configuration and the periodic reviews of the program. He reviewed an analysis he prepared outlining the attributes and concerns regarding the configuration. A general discussion followed.
b.Budget implications, short term and long term - Following Mr. Williams’ presentation, the Board and Administrators discussed various kindergarten and first grade configurations and the impact they would have on the budget and class size.
6. Response to Parent Survey Concerns
Mr. Williams distributed a response to specific areas of concern that were identified in the parent survey and elaborated on the steps he is taking to address each concern. Discussion centered the issue that parents do not feel they have enough information about curriculum. Mr. Williams explained the various actions that are being taken at the Ray School to improve this communication.
7. Adjournment
The Retreat adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
