MINUTES

Present: Board members Cheney, Gray, Kaplan, Sachsse, Vitt; Administrators Gersen and Edson.
Guest: Bill Talbott, VT Department of Education

1. Call to order

Chair Sachsse called the retreat to order at 4:10 p.m.

2. Act 68

Bill Talbott, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer with the VT Department of Education updated the Board on Act 68 and how to calculate tax rates with Act 68.  

3. Reflections of Rob Edson's first year as Principal

Rob Edson reviewed his first year as Principal, offering insights into the challenges he faced. He also spoke of the success he has enjoyed in his first year.

4. Marion Cross School Philosophy

The Board and Administrators viewed the format of the Marion Cross School Philosophy and discussed the Philosophy in relationship to Board goal setting.

5. Goal setting

The Board drafted three goals, which will be discussed and approved at their regular Board meeting in September. The draft goals are as follows:

1. Develop a plan for implementing the Marion Cross School Philosophy.   Synchronize instructional goal setting to reflect the Marion Cross School Philosophy.

2. Develop a long term (3 - 5 year) strategic plan.

3. Contain per pupil spending at or below 125% of statewide average. This goal may be constrained by the School Board's commitment to educational excellence.

6. Value-added assessment

Dr. Gersen briefly discussed an article he distributed on value-added assessment.

7. Adjournment

The retreat adjourned at 9:40 p.m.
