Survey Results: The Questionnaire Results Are In!

We have been seeking public input on providing fields for our athletes while also benefiting the community. Toward that end, a questionnaire was created to gauge the sentiments of all community members and mailed to Norwich and Hanover households.  We had 902 responses and the results were tabulated and analyzed by Robert Sokol, Department of Sociology, Dartmouth College.

Both the Full Report (PDF; about 16 p ages) and the Comments (PDF; about 60 pages, but nicely indexed and bookmarked) can be dowloaded for easy viewing or printing. They are worth looking at, because they offer a snapshot of the variety and depth of concern and values shared by those in this community.

To the Crux of the Matter: Why did people vote no in the 2004 bond vote?

·      Too expensive  49%; and too elaborate  42%

·      Plan not useful to community at large  25%

·      Places too many fields in Norwich  19%

·      Would create traffic problems  19%

·      Opposed artificial turf  15%

Other Highlights & Revelations

64% of the respondents want some kind of fields development in Norwich; this number could be higher because 17% of the respondents said it was too complicated to answer.

However, 60% of the respondents want the primary site for games to be at Hanover High School.

Also, the community feels very strongly that the towns and schools should share fields; for example, 85% of the respondents agree that when possible teams should share fields and stagger practices.

And now the million dollar question: What are people willing to spend?

According to Bob Sokol's analysis, the community would most likely support a project in the $2-3 million range and as much as $3 million; however, the plans need to incorporate community values and take into account the needs of the whole community.
