Dear SAU 70 School Community,
As the confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to grow, guidance from our state and regional agencies stresses social distancing and other behavioral measures to limit the spread of the disease. Many of you commented on my suggestions regarding our older children and asked for firmer guidance for them. Our youth need to be reminded that even though preliminary observations indicate that younger people tend to suffer less severe symptoms of COVID-19, their role in the transmission (or containment) of the disease is extremely important. We need to impress upon them that if they disregard guidance about social distancing and proper infection control measures, they could put others at serious risk.
With our schools closed, we will need to work together to provide safe ways for all of our children to stay connected not only with school, but with each other. I encourage all of you to think of activities or events that could bring our kids together safely, even if only virtually. As we continue to refine our plans for remote instruction, we will also be approaching established student groups to develop communication strategies for preserving connections between classmates.
I am overwhelmed by the support we have received from our school community. So many of you have offered to help - some with specific talents and experience to share, others with a general willingness to do anything necessary. We will likely take you up on those kind offers as we move through the first few weeks of school closure and the transition to "remote instruction." By the end of the day Friday, we will be sharing our plans for educational continuity and will actively seek your feedback. As I've said previously, we will do our best to provide meaningful learning activities and to preserve our students' connection to school.
Finally, you will notice that we have updated our website to include a form to apply for assistance with meals. Please do not hesitate to take advantage of this service. Our food service staff and bus drivers have been working diligently to support our families in this time of need.
Best wishes for your good health,
