Welcome back...
Important messages for parents, guardians and students for the 2019-2020 school year.
Parent Letters
Parents of 9th Grade Students
Dear Parents and Guardians of the Hanover High School Class of 2023,
My wife and I have two children, ages six and eight. Life at these young ages is full of firsts - starting school, going to camp, trying a new activity, or simply taking swimming lessons with other children they don’t know. Each of these firsts can be anxiety provoking, especially for one of our two kiddos who’s tends to be more introverted. At this age their trepidation tackling something new tends to be evident in their behavior (please share any and all tips you might have to navigating the first ‘drop off’!).
Though the behavioral and developmental challenges are entirely different, the transition to high school is yet another in the series of firsts that you have experienced with your child. It is important the adults in their lives recognize that new ninth grade students are excited, anxious, scared, confused and filled with questions and self-doubt. No matter how confidently they might present externally, they all feel this way. No matter how independently they might present externally, they need the adults who surround them to express and demonstrate, over and over again, our love and support for them. They also need us to talk with them about what they are going through. Don’t be dissuaded by the teenage eye-rolling or other forms of posturing, they are listening and need to know that we all find transitions to be challenging. I encourage us all to share the strategies we use for stepping into something new.
We will have significant programming in place to help your child to be wrapped into their new school. Our Peer Leaders will lead the new students through an orientation and will be visible and available throughout the year to assist with whatever is needed. Your children will be surrounded by a warm, caring and highly talented staff. Our community has generously provided its students with a facility that is robustly equipped, beautiful and safe. We have many clubs and co-curricular activities that offer opportunities to interact with folks who have a shared interest/passion.
Finally, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for any reason. Nothing is more important to me professionally, or to our staff, than the success of each individual student. I can be reached at justin.campbell@hanovernorwichschools.org or by calling (603) 643-3431 x2100. I look forward to meeting you in person quite soon.

You recently received a message from our Superintendent’s office with information regarding our registration process. It is very important that we begin the new school year with the information we need to support your child. Please complete the registration prior to the start of school. In addition, if your student is participating in a fall sport, they must complete the online registration using Family ID. When a second, non-custodial or co-custodial, parent is identified on the registration forms, HHS will send copies of all information to both households. Please be sure to notify the school if a court or other legal order bars a parent/guardian from receiving information about your child.
You will receive periodic communications from HHS throughout the rest of the summer and we will post all of this info on our website (www.hanoverhigh.org) in case anything is lost in the haze of warm weather. The HHS Handbook is also available on our website. The Handbook contains information including school district policies and procedures, FERPA (records privacy) notification, and our confidentiality statement. I encourage you to review the information in the Handbook with your student.
Thank you in advance for your attention to these important details surrounding the start of school. I’m looking forward to a great year.
Sincerely,

Parents of 10th Grade Students
Dear Parents and Guardians of the HHS Class of 2022,
There is a predictable ebb and flow to the pace of a student’s high school career. The newness of ninth grade is exciting and a bit scary as students make the transition to high school. The junior year tends to be one of focus - students are finding and exploring their interests in the classroom, on the stage, on the playing fields and throughout the community. The senior year revisits the scary excitement of grade nine as students think about, and work towards, their next transition. The sophomore year stands out to me as frequently confusing to students, a place where it’s possible for them to lose direction. Our staff is well aware that for some students, their path is least clear during the 10th grade year.
We work hard to give the sophomores the level of support, encouragement and direction that they so need and we need your assistance. A strong partnership between parents and the other adults in students’ lives - teachers, coaches, mentors, and even principals - is a critical factor in their achieving success. Nothing is more important to me professionally, or to our dedicated staff, than your student’s success. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have. I assure you we will do the same.
It was a pleasure to watch the class of 2022 enter our school last year. They are a talented, interesting and energetic group. It will be thrilling to see what they are capable of given our combined support, advice and loving encouragement.

11th Grade Parents
Dear Parents and Guardians of the HHS Class of 2021,
There are a few indicators that, to me, clearly show a student’s healthy progression through the developmental stages of high school. During the junior year, I want to see that a student is ‘hooked’ by something that’s happening here. It could be in the classroom, in the art studio, the chorus room, on the athletic field, in a club or activity, etc. The location isn’t important. The activity isn’t important.
What’s important is that students build a meaningful connection to our community.
It is my sincere hope that a Hanover High School education helps each student to move on to his or her next best place in life. To do this, students need to engage with the community, resources and expertise that exists here. This process of connecting builds in students a pattern that will occur time and time again at each stage of their lives - when they enter college, when they start a new job, and when they undergo other major life changes or challenges. At each stage they will know how to access the personal and professional resources that surround them.
So, our shared goal is to make sure that each and every student, specifically the 11th grade given the context of this letter, is connected to our school. We are very lucky that the community has supported us with a robust facility and a talented staff. We are, therefore, able to offer a lot but we can always do more. Please reach out to me to let me know if you are aware of a student who is struggling to find a connection. Please also let me know if you have ideas about opportunities we could be making available.
I have genuinely appreciated coming to know the junior class over the past two years. I look forward to seeing what they accomplish this year. Please know that I am always available to you should you have any questions or concerns regarding your child.

12th Grade Parents
Dear Parents and Guardians of the HHS Class of 2020,
The senior year is made of two distinct halves - many of you with older children have experienced this already. The first half of the year is a frenzy of schoolwork, athletics, etc. all superimposed on the college application/post-high school planning process. Then, approximately mid-year everything changes and the unimaginable glacial pressures evaporate overnight as plans and acceptances fall into place. The second half of the year is different, dominated by a lack of pressure which, for many, is just as difficult to navigate as the first half of the year.
Our seniors need us to constantly interject reality into their lives. The college application process is important, but not all-important. Similarly, fun spring-of-senior-year activities are important, but not all-important. Now, more than ever, it’s necessary for our seniors to keep a balance in their lives. They will be pulled in many directions and I, for one, will encourage them to remember to rest, to spend time with family and friends, and to work hard to realize the incredible potential we see within each of them. I know you will join the entire HHS staff in helping the stressed out first-half-of-the-year-seniors and the relaxed second-half-of-the-year-seniors to flourish academically and personally. They are a remarkable group!!
Finally, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for any reason. Nothing is more important to me professionally, or to our staff, than the success of each individual student. I can be reached at justin.campbell@hanovernorwichschools.org or by calling (603) 643-3431 x2100.

P.S. Participating in a sport or Footlighters (our theater program) during the fall season is a great way to get to know other students and we highly recommend you getting involved early! For information about when the various fall teams begin practice (usually in the 2 weeks before school begins), please visit our athletics web page at hanoverathletics.com or contact our athletics director, Megan Sobel, at hhs-athletics@hanovernorwichschools.org.
The first Footlighters meeting will be Friday, August 30th. All who audition are given parts or you can choose to join the set building or tech crew. For more information about this, please contact our theater advisor, Terry Samwick, at terrysamwick@hanovernorwichschools.org.
Athletics Registration Welcome Letter
Dear Student-Athletes and Families,
We are excited to begin the 2019-20 school year and are looking forward to working with our students, coaches, and faculty to make HHS Athletics an engaging and positive experience for all.
Every student-athlete’s parent/guardian, whose child wishes to participate in an HHS sport at any time during the school year, must register online with FamilyID where you can read our Policies and electronically sign all necessary forms. This is our first year using FamilyID and we hope the athletic registration process is as seamless as possible. Registration for fall sports is open now. Winter and spring registrations will open at a later date.
During the registration process, you may upload your athlete’s current physical. Please be aware that all students MUST have a physical exam on record in the Athletic Office. The exam date must be within the last two years and cannot expire prior to the last date to play of the current sport season in which they are participating.
There is also a link to pay the Participation Fee of $150.00 which each student-athlete must pay for the sport they play each season. You will find information on that during the online registration process. We will use the PayPal system with the hope that this online payment option makes things more convenient for families.
FamilyID is a secure registration platform that provides you with an easy, user-friendly way to register for our athletic programs, and helps us to be more administratively efficient. It is very important that any student wishing to play a sport at HHS, complete the registration process. Failure to properly register will postpone a student’s eligibility and ability to participate. Registration must be completed before tryouts and we must have a current physical on file. Participation Fees must be paid prior to the first in-season event in order for your athlete to remain eligible. Athletics registration is a separate process from school registration through the PowerSchool portal.
To register for a fall sport, please go to Fall Athletics Registration FamilyID. From there, you will create a new account or log in to your existing FamilyID account. More detailed information and instructions for online Athletics Registration can be found here. Fall sport tryout dates and information is also available at this link.
Please make sure that your registration is submitted, a current physical has been supplied and the participation fee has been paid. Incomplete registrations may affect student-athlete’s eligibility to participate. Please feel free to call the HHS Athletic Department at 603-643-0655 with any questions or concerns.
Welcome to 2019-20 Hanover High School Athletics. Go Marauders!
