HHS Aerospace and Aviation Club
Congratulations to Hanover High School on its acceptance into the NASA and NSF-sponsored National Eclipse Ballooning Project (NEBP) for the engineering track. Students will participate in a NASA-mission-like adventure in data acquisition and analysis through scientific ballooning during the 10/14/2023 annular and 4/8/2024 total solar eclipses. At sites along the eclipse path, student teams in the engineering track will use innovative large balloon systems to live stream video to the NASA eclipse website, observe in situ perturbations in atmospheric phenomena, and conduct individually designed experiments.
Hanover High School is one of five high schools participating in the project in the nation and the only high school selected in the Eastern United States. Most of the participating institutions are universities including Boston University, UCSD, U Michigan, ASU, Embry Riddle, U Pittsburgh, Plymouth State University, and Virginia Tech. The project is fully supporting approximately 55 teams, divided into pods for both atmospheric science and engineering tracks. Our pod is led by a team of professors out of the University of Maine.
Special thanks to Christopher Helali, HHS staff member and advisor to the HHS Aerospace and Aviation Club, who applied for the project on behalf of the club and the high school. Christopher Helali and Kevin Lavigne, a science teacher at HHS, are the advisors to the HHS NEBP team which was carefully selected after a competitive application process. The ten HHS students on the team are: Sebastian Bujarski, Samuel Calderwood, James Chafouleas, Zachary Edson, Taehan Kim, Wyatt Lake, Krrish Mishra, Kavi Patel, Joshua Warner, and Rui Yi Zhang. NEBP is supported by NASA's Science Mission Directorate Science Activation program and by NASA's Space Grant College and Fellowship program.
